Academy Curriculum Overview

A glimpse into each course that makes up the Spring Publishing Academy โ€” from the compulsory foundation to every specialist track.

Every student begins here. This foundational course covers the full landscape of publishing โ€” how the industry is structured, the journey a manuscript takes from first draft to finished book, the key players involved (authors, editors, designers, printers, distributors, and retailers), and the different publishing models available today. By the end, you will have a clear roadmap for everything that follows in the academy.

This course builds the core craft of writing. You will explore the fundamentals of compelling storytelling โ€” developing ideas, structuring narrative, writing with clarity and intention, finding and sustaining your authorial voice, and understanding the specific demands of different genres and formats including fiction, non-fiction, and memoir. Practical writing exercises run throughout every week.

Great books are made in editing. This course walks you through the full editorial process โ€” developmental editing (big-picture structure and content), structural editing (chapter and scene architecture), line editing (sentence craft, rhythm, and voice), copy editing (grammar, style, and consistency), and proofreading (final accuracy check). You will practise on real manuscripts and develop the trained editorial eye every professional writer and editor needs.

This course teaches the visual and technical craft behind a properly produced book. Topics include typography and interior layout, cover design principles, working with designers, preparing print-ready files, understanding paper and binding specifications, formatting ebooks for Kindle, Epub, and PDF, and managing the production workflow from final manuscript to print-ready or upload-ready files.

A great book still needs to be found. This course covers the full spectrum of book marketing โ€” author platform building, social media strategy for writers, launch planning and execution, working with book reviewers and bloggers, media and press outreach, email marketing for authors, selling on platforms like Amazon, Selar, and Okadabooks, and sustaining book sales beyond launch day.

Publishing is both a creative and a commercial enterprise. This course unpacks the business side โ€” publishing contracts, rights and royalties, copyright law, working with traditional publishers versus self-publishing, ISBNs and legal deposit, distribution models, pricing strategy, and how to build a sustainable long-term author career. Ideal for authors who want to own their publishing future with confidence.

Ghostwriting is one of the most in-demand skills in publishing. This course teaches you how to write brilliantly under someone else's name โ€” conducting in-depth discovery interviews, capturing another person's voice authentically, managing client relationships, maintaining confidentiality, structuring a ghostwriting project, delivering to brief and deadline, and pricing and marketing your ghostwriting services professionally.
